Sistema.bio secures $15M to drive global Biogas expansion

Biogas technology leader Sistema.bio has secured $15 million in fresh funding to expand its reach and provide clean energy and regenerative agriculture solutions to smallholder farmers worldwide.

The funding round was led by ElectriFI, managed by EDFI Management Company, and saw participation from a coalition of existing investors including Chroma Impact Investment, KawiSafi Ventures, and AXA IM Alts, among others.

This investment comes on the heels of significant growth for Sistema.bio, which has seen its sales increase fivefold in the last three years. Sistema.bio has operations in 31 countries with its African footprint initially in Kenya, Uganda, Tanzania, and Ethiopia, as well as with the expansion now in Malawi, Zimbabwe, Zambia, Mozambique, Ghana, and Nigeria.

The company provides innovative biogas technology that converts animal waste into clean energy for cooking, heating, and electricity, while simultaneously producing biofertilizer to enhance crop yields. Sistema.bio has installed more than 12,000 biodigesters, providing clean and reliable energy access to over 100,000 people in Sub-Saharan Africa. Engie Access, Africa’s leading off-grid energy services company has partnered with Sistema.bio to introduce biogas digesters in Zambia and Mozambique.

Joyce Chacho, Independent Board Chair at Sistema.bio, highlighted the strategic importance of this investment, noting the investors’ confidence in the company’s mission to scale its transformative impact across Asia, Africa, and Latin America.

Building on its 2021 Series B funding, this new financing package will drive further growth and attract additional external capital. The company uses advanced data tracking platforms to enhance its impact, delivering high-quality carbon mitigation, sequestration, and climate change adaptation programs.

These initiatives support the decarbonization of agriculture and promote regenerative farming practices.

With operations spanning three continents, Sistema.bio has already positively impacted over 100,000 farms and reduced over 1 million tons of  COâ‚‚e emissions annually. This latest funding round will also enable the company to further expand its reach, technology, and continue its mission of empowering farmers with sustainable, regenerative solutions.

"We are now better positioned to reach our goal of empowering one million farmers by 2025, and reducing 1% of global emissions by 2030,” said Alexander Eaton, CEO and co-founder of Sistema.bio.
