iPhone XR review: Apple's best price-to-value champion

The iPhone XR is often hailed as Apple's best iPhone of the year for a reason. Released in 2018, the XR phone marked a significant departure from Apple's traditional high-end focus.

There's no doubt the XR launch was a hit. In 2024, it continues to offer a blend of premium features, such as vibrant colour options, the capable A12 Bionic chip, and long battery life—all at an affordable price point.

This model at $250 showcased Apple’s intent to cater to a wider demographic, proving that premium features could be packaged more affordably. This alone might set a precedent for future models in Apple's lineup.

Of course, much has changed since the release of the iPhone XR. Apple has introduced newer models with advanced features like 5G, improved telephoto cameras, and OLEDs.

While the iPhone XR remains a solid choice for budget-conscious users, it's essential to weigh its capabilities against the latest offerings before making a decision.

Let's dive into the details

The iPhone XR has a standout design and a screen that could be better

Unlike the more subdued tones of previous models, the iPhone XR is a fashion statement with bolder colour options—our favourite being the classic red. Its smooth curves and vibrant colours make the XR a joy to hold.

While the aluminium frame offers a different feel compared to the stainless steel on higher-end models, it complements the glass back beautifully.

In terms of size, the XR strikes a balance between portability and screen real estate. It’s larger than the iPhone 8 Plus without being overly bulky, making it an ideal choice for those who find the XS too small and the XS Max too large.

For durability, the iPhone XR is IP67 rated, offering water resistance up to one metre for 30 minutes. While not as rugged as some competitors, this level of protection provides peace of mind.

However, as with any smartphone, using a case is recommended to safeguard against accidental drops and scratches. And with the iPhone XR rear camera build, you’ll find a single optically stabilised wide-angle camera jutting out slightly from the glass. Apple offers a clear case that allows you to showcase the phone's beautiful colours while providing added protection.

The device surprisingly features a large, vibrant Liquid Retina display that delivers impressive visuals. Although not an OLED panel, it offers excellent colour reproduction and clarity.

The bezels, however, might be slightly thicker than those on the XS models, but they don't significantly impact the viewing experience.

Face ID provides secure and convenient unlocking, while the stereo speakers deliver clear audio. However, the absence of a headphone jack might be a drawback for some users.

The iPhone XR: Power under the hood including storage and battery life

Equipped with Apple's powerful A12 Bionic chip, the iPhone XR delivers impressive performance. While it may not match the raw speed of the latest models, it handles everyday tasks, gaming, and multitasking effortlessly.

The XR's storage options cater to various needs, with capacities ranging from 64GB to 256GB. Notably, Apple doesn't offer a 128GB option for the smaller iPhone 8, making the XR an attractive choice for those seeking this storage capacity.

Battery life is another highlight. The XR comfortably lasts through a full day of heavy usage, even outperforming the XS Max. This endurance, combined with its overall performance, makes it a reliable companion.

While benchmark scores may show slight performance differences compared to newer models on the market, the average user will likely find the XR's speed more than adequate for daily activities.

The iOS 12 equals a fluid software experience

The iPhone XR comes preloaded with iOS 12, offering familiar gestures, Face ID, Animoji fun and an intuitive user experience. Although lacking 3D Touch, Apple's introduction of Haptic Touch provides a suitable alternative for accessing quick actions.

Features like Grouped Notifications and Screen Time enhance usability, helping you stay organised and manage your phone usage effectively. The overall software experience is smooth, there's however, room for improvement in terms of notification organisation.

The XR's integration with the Apple ecosystem is seamless, with features like Continuity and Handoff providing a cohesive experience across devices.

Moreso, Apple typically supports iPhone processors with new iOS updates for about four years. Surprisingly, the XR has continued to receive regular software updates since its release in 2018, ensuring its relevance in 2024.

iPhone XR has a strong camera and that’s about it

The iPhone XR boasts a capable single-lens camera that captures impressive photos. While it lacks the versatility of dual-lens setups found on higher-end models, it excels in delivering well-exposed, vibrant images. Features like Smart HDR contribute to well-balanced images, even in challenging situations.

Portrait mode, made possible through software and AI, is a highlight. Though it may not match the precision of the XS's dual-lens system, it produces pleasing results for human subjects--a noteworthy feature at this price point. The front-facing camera is equally impressive, capturing detailed selfies and enabling fun features like Animoji and Memoji.

While the XR's camera holds its own, it's essential to acknowledge the advancements in camera technology since its release. Newer models offer zooming, telephoto and improved low-light features.

However, this is all relative. For everyday photography, the XR remains a reliable choice.

Should you buy the iPhone XR?

Absolutely. You won’t be disappointed. The iPhone XR is a fantastic choice even after seven years. Running on Apple’s A12 Bionic chip, it remains capable even by today’s standards. While it may lack some advanced features, it compensates with stunning colours, great battery life, and intuitive iOS gestures.

At less than $250, the iPhone XR offers reasonable camera performance. It's a great option if you're on a tight budget but still want a reliable phone. However, keep in mind that it lacks the impressive camera setup of the iPhone 11 and iPhone 12.

As always, it depends on what you want from a phone. If running the latest specs and hardware is your priority, consider the iPhone 11 or 11 Pro Max for better camera capabilities. The iPhone 12's OLED and 5G connectivity too, though at a higher price tag.
